In that capacity, his responsibilities include everything from day-to-day advice and counsel to physician employment agreements, third-party vendor contracts, and audit requests from the office of the inspector general. One half involves serving as a generalist in support of Banner Medical Group, which employs physicians. “There was a halo effect that Banner Health had among my family that made me care about the organization,” he says.Īt Banner Health, Martinez’s responsibilities are divided into two parts. So, when an opportunity to work as in-house counsel at Banner came up, Martinez pursued it immediately. “She was treated at the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center and received great care,” he recalls. He found his niche in employment law working over a year at the largest labor and employment firm in the country, and then as in-house counsel in labor and employment for the Hershey Company in Pennsylvania.īut when a close family member was diagnosed with cancer, Martinez moved back to Phoenix yet again. Although Chicago was an exciting change of pace and climate, he missed the Southwest and took a position at a law firm in Phoenix after graduation, where he learned the basics of labor and employment law. Now a leader of the legal department for Banner Health-the innovative nonprofit health system and second-largest employer in Arizona-Martinez cannot imagine being anywhere else.Īfter majoring in economics and religious studies at the University of New Mexico, Martinez got his law degree from Northwestern University.
